How to Check - Part 1

|
This is where you start to check how findable (or not) YOUR web site is on the internet. We're going to walk you through the process of finding out how many Domain Name Servers serve your domain, what they're called, whether they're working, and get an idea of where they are. You may wish to print out this page or jot down the details of the form below to record the information you're about to gather .... Name Server details for your website http://_________________________________________
Before we start: If, at any stage through this exercise, you get stuck, please feel free to just click on the "Check-Me!" link on the menu, and request our FREE "Check-Me" service. We'll perform all the tests for you, and email you back with a report, and our comments, on your DNS service. (Please note, subject to demand, we aim to reply to all Check-Me requests within 72 hours). STAGE 1: First of all, we need to find out how many name servers look after your domain, and what they're called. By using the Who-Is link on our menu, and entering your domain name, you should be able to see the relevant details. For example, if you were to perform a who-is check on our domain, you would see our name servers are listed as: Name Server: NS1.DNSHOTBOX.COM Name Server: NS2.DNSHOTBOX.COM Name Server: NS3.DNSHOTBOX.COM Name Server: NS4.DNSHOTBOX.COM Name Server: NS5.DNSHOTBOX.COM Name Server: NS6.DNSHOTBOX.COM As you can see, we at dnshotbox.com have 3 pairs of name servers, and we have them sited at different geographical locations. By making our name servers geographically distant we're ensuring that even a major catastrophe cannot take them all out - At least one pair will continue to drive traffic towards our web sites and guide our emails. Once you have noted down your own domain's name server details (just the names for now), please continue to How To Check [Part 2].
